Dr. Arthur N. Mcunu leads the cardiac services department at Howard University Hospital in Washington, D.C. He is also an assistant professor of surgery at his alma mater, Howard University College of Medicine.

Educational Background

Dr. Mcunu was born in raised in Soweto, South Africa and – following a period of great upheaval and violence in his home country – moved to the United States in the 1980s to pursue his medical career. After receiving his bachelor’s degree from Xavier University in Louisiana, he moved to Washington, D.C. and attended medical school at Howard University. He competed a residency at Howard University Hospital and a fellowship in surgery at Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan.

Professional Highlights

As a cardiac surgeon, Dr. Mcunu’s area of expertise is surgery of the heart. He is also highly skilled in thoracic (lung and chest) surgery, having previously served as a thoracic surgeon at Cabell Huntington Hospital in Huntington, West Virginia.

Mesothelioma is known to strike both of these parts of the body. When mesothelioma occurs in the lungs, it is known as “pleural mesothelioma”; this is the most commonly diagnosed type of the disease, and frequently requires surgery either to remove the affected lung or the lung’s lining. When mesothelioma strikes the lining of the heart, it is known as pericardial mesothelioma.

Additional Work

Dr. Mcunu, whose native language is Zulu, is the author of Zulu Chest Cutter: From the Slums of Soweto to Success in America. Published in 2011, the book charts Dr. Mcunu’s experience growing up poor in South Africa during a series of violent uprisings against a system of racial segregation known as apartheid. After living through a historic massacre in 1983, Dr. Mcunu was compelled to move to the United States to further his education.
