04. Asbestos Use in Philadelphia

Asbestos Use in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Chrysotile, also known as white asbestos, is the most prevalent type of asbestos in Philadelphia buildings. Asbestos was widely used to make common building materials stronger while reducing thermal conductivity. Asbestos helped improve the fire resistance of wall paneling, flooring, pipe wrap, acoustic ceilings, insulation and drywall.

As a result, individuals who live and work in Philadelphia are at risk of asbestos exposure. Asbestos throughout Pennsylvania has been linked to occupational illness and death among construction and manufacturing workers, teachers, mechanics, hairdressers and firefighters.

Asbestos in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Schools

Most of Philadelphia’s public schools were constructed prior to 1978 using materials that likely contained asbestos. To date, asbestos has been found in more than 150 Philadelphia schools. Some estimate there are at least 175 schools needing asbestos remediation. Asbestos exposure among teachers, students and school staff at sites throughout the city has been linked to serious health issues.

Asbestos exposure in Philadelphia schools gained national attention following the release of the “Toxic City” investigative series. This series of articles by the Philadelphia Inquirer revealed the extent of asbestos contamination in the city’s schools. Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Landmarks and Asbestos

Philadelphia is one of the most populous cities in the United States. In 2019, there were an estimated 1.58 million individuals living in the city. Philadelphia’s popularity has led to the development of many prominent structures. Many of these landmarks emerged during the height of asbestos use.

The Ambler Boiler House

Ambler, Pennsylvania is located next to Philadelphia. Ambler has a long-recognized history with asbestos that has affected Philadelphia because of the cities’ close proximity. Some of the first asbestos companies in the United States were founded in Ambler. These factories exposed thousands of workers to asbestos in the toxic factories. Many workers now face asbestos illnesses, including mesothelioma cancer.

The Ambler Boiler House, located in Philadelphia’s suburbs, posed a risk to nearby residents. The suburbs are one of the most popular living destinations for Pennsylvania residents.

The Ambler Boiler House in Philadelphia was an asbestos plant for the Keasbey & Mattison Company. The plant ceased using asbestos decades ago. However, the mineral still remained in its construction. In particular, the building’s smokestack raised concerns, as it contained aging asbestos insulation.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) provided a grant to help with asbestos abatement. The renovation cost around $16 million and concluded in 2011. Abatement ensured residents wouldn’t face exposure from the damaged asbestos insulation.

Jack Frost Sugar House

Another prominent structure in Philadelphia was the Jack Frost Sugar House. The sugar manufacturing site included 12 multilevel buildings built in the early 1900s. The buildings housed cooking vessels and boilers insulated with thick amosite asbestos.

The sugar house later underwent a large asbestos abatement project. An abatement company hauled away 2,500 tons of asbestos. The company conducted air and dust monitoring throughout the project to reduce the risk of harmful exposure.

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Naval Shipyard and Asbestos

The Philadelphia Navy Shipyard was the site of some of the earliest shipbuilding for the U.S. Navy. At its production peak, during World War II, there were close to 47,000 workers involved in production and site activity. Throughout its 120-year history, countless individuals could have been exposed to asbestos and other hazardous materials at the shipyard and its other facilities.

In 1996, the Philadelphia Navy Yard closed, and massive cleanup efforts took place to address contamination and prepare the site for future use.
