Hoboken, New Jersey

Hoboken is a city on the Hudson River in the state of New Jersey. Located in Hudson County, Hoboken has a population of approximately 50,000. Hoboken's first organized development came with its acquisition by Colonel John Stevens in 1784. Stevens initially developed the town as a waterfront resort, but his own work as an engineer and inventor planted the seeds of industrialization which made Hoboken a major transport and manufacturing area in the 19th and 20th centuries. Today, Hoboken is known for its unique shops, cultural events and restored vintage housing, as well as being home to Stevens Institute of Technology.

Colonel Stevens laid much of the groundwork for the city of Hoboken, creating the Hoboken Land and Improvement Company to build housing, lay out streets and develop manufacturing sites. Stevens also received the nation's first railroad charter in 1815, and operated a steamship ferry service. In 1867, the Keuffel and Esser Company began selling drafting supplies, and built their Hoboken factory in 1880. The W. & A. Fletcher Company built a machine shop in 1891 which was later acquired by Bethlehem Steel Corporation and operated round-the-clock during World War II. In 1893, Thomas J. Lipton founded a company to bring affordable, quality tea to the U.S. market. Though no longer headquartered in Hoboken, Lipton is still the world's largest tea manufacturer. Another familiar beverage company, Maxwell House, operated a coffee factory in Hoboken from 1938 until the late 20th century. All of these properties have been restored or redeveloped into apartments and mixed-use businesses, with the Machine Shop also housing the Hoboken Historical Museum.

Hoboken's history of manufacturing and adaptive reuse of older structures puts it in a high-risk category for asbestos exposure. Workers exposed to asbestos may be at risk for mesothelioma, a cancer of the lungs. Mesothelioma physicians in and around Hoboken are listed at the bottom of this page. If you were exposed to asbestos in Hoboken, you may benefit from seeking the advice of an asbestos attorney.
