New Haven was founded in 1638 and is the second largest city in Connecticut. New Haven is at the point where the West, Mill and Quinnipiac rivers flow into New Haven Harbor. New Haven is organized around nine central squares with a common green. Known variously as the home of Yale University, the city of elms, and the gateway to New England, New Haven has contributed to American life items ranging from frisbees to hamburgers to the Winchester repeating rifle to vulcanized rubber. In New Haven originated the clinical use of penicillin and mass production of manufactured goods.

Eli Whitney, inventor of the cotton gin, established a gun factory here. New Haven prospered as an industrial city in the 19th century, manufacturing weapons, clocks, carriages and other goods. The local economy declined when factories closed after World War II. After the world wars, new roads and the increasing availability of the automobile opened the floodgates on the middle class exodus to the suburbs. As suburban communities gave birth to industrial parks and shopping centers, New Haven’s economic condition became progressively worse. Recently, the city’s downtown area has seen extensive revitalization. Modern New Haven remains a major New England seaport and distribution center with strengths in research and biotechnology.

Asbestos exposure in the workplace has been a problem in New Haven over the years. New Haven has a large industrial and manufacturing base where asbestos-containing materials were used frequently. Additionally, both residential and commercial construction projects have put workers at risk in New Haven. If you or a loved one were exposed to asbestos in New Haven, Connecticut, you may be at risk to develop certain asbestos-related diseases including mesothelioma (a terminal cancer). For those diagnosed with mesothelioma in New Haven, the area has quality medical care, cancer centers, and doctors that can provide treatment for mesothelioma.
