04. Asbestos Use in New Haven

Asbestos Use in New Haven, Connecticut

Asbestos was used in the construction and repair of buildings, businesses, schools and homes throughout New Haven. Most construction completed prior to the 1980s used asbestos-containing products in the process. As a result, tradesmen who completed construction, maintenance and repair work on buildings in the city were put at risk of exposure to asbestos.

Asbestos Found in Buildings at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut

New Haven’s Yale University is a notable asbestos site in Connecticut. Asbestos-containing products were used during the construction of buildings and dormitories on campus. Asbestos products have been found in the fireproofing, piping, boilers, insulation, plaster, roofing, walls, flooring and ceilings of Yale University buildings.

The Art and Architecture building is a major structure on the Yale University campus. More than 2,000 people occupy this building each academic year. Asbestos products were used in the construction of this building in 1963 and during subsequent maintenance repairs by insulators, pipefitters, painters, maintenance workers and other tradesmen. These workers and others in similar industries are at risk of developing mesothelioma due to asbestos exposure from the Art and Architecture building.

Records show asbestos fiber concentrations exceeded the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) allowable limits in certain areas of the building. Eventually, some of this asbestos was removed to eliminate this health hazard.

Now, when renovation work is completed on campus buildings, the Yale Environmental Health & Safety (Yale EHS) group reviews the proposed work in advance to ensure asbestos-containing materials are not disturbed. Yale EHS ensures proper precautions are used if asbestos products are disturbed or removed on site. This helps ensure the safety of staff, faculty, students and tradesmen at Yale University.
