Construction at the Combustion Engineering jobsite in Windsor began in 1955. The facility employed thousands of workers. The company manufactured fuel burning equipment including industrial boilers, stokers and dryers. These boilers and heat systems contained asbestos insulation. Boilermakers and other tradesmen who worked around the Combustion Engineering facility were exposed to harmful asbestos products.
The U.S. Department of Energy performed an environmental investigation of the Combustion Engineering Windsor facility in 1994. The investigators recommended a thorough cleanup of the property to adhere to environmental regulations and standards. As a result, the buildings and facilities were demolished by 2012.
Combustion Engineering boilers were linked to a machinist’s asbestos exposure and pleural mesothelioma case. The victim was exposed to asbestos insulation in Combustion Engineering boilers during his 39-year career, which later resulted in his death in 1998. High levels of the same asbestos used in the company’s boilers were also present in the worker’s lungs. Any level of asbestos exposure can lead to an asbestos-related illness.
