04. Asbestos Use in Boston

Asbestos Use in Boston, Massachusetts

Asbestos exposure in Massachusetts may have led workers and residents to develop an asbestos disease. In the Boston area, asbestos has been found in factories, textile mills, schools and hospitals. As Boston grew, more buildings were built throughout the city. Buildings constructed before 1980 may still contain asbestos. The mineral was also used extensively at the city’s shipyards. As a result, workers, residents and visitors in Boston may have been exposed to asbestos and are at risk of developing a related illness.

Today, state legislators in Massachusetts are calling for stricter asbestos regulations through the Healthy Buildings, Healthy Air Initiative. The Massachusetts attorney general also established a database of schools affected by asbestos to help members of the public evaluate their health risks.

Asbestos in Boston, Massachusetts Shipyards

Boston is home to some of the nation’s oldest and busiest shipyards, including the historic Charlestown Navy Yard. Today, it is known as the Boston Navy Yard. Workers at this shipyard built various ships from 1800 through 1974. This shipyard stands out for intensive asbestos consumption, which endangered shipbuilders, repair workers and general laborers. Research suggests the U.S. Navy began using asbestos in ships in the 1920s, and its use continued through the late 1970s.

At its height, asbestos was used in hundreds of parts for shipbuilding, ranging from boilers and insulation to gaskets and adhesives. For instance, internal Navy memos show that a single submarine contained more than 62,465 pounds of insulation. Other types of ships also contained large amounts of asbestos insulation and other asbestos materials.

At the height of production, the Boston Navy Yard employed more than 50,000 workers. With the heavy asbestos use at the yard, all of these employees risked exposure.

Other notable shipyards in the Boston area that may have caused asbestos exposure include:

Individuals who worked at these facilities decades ago may still develop mesothelioma today due to the long latency period.
