Windsor, Connecticut’s first English settlement, was established in 1633 at the confluence of the Farmington and Connecticut rivers. The colony was initially known as Matianuck, later renamed Dorchester, and finally renamed to its present day name Windsor in 1637. Located in Hartford County, situated along the northern border of Hartford, Windsor is home to nearly 29,000 residents. The town has a mix of urban and suburban areas–a scattering of farms and tobacco fields along with residential neighborhoods and clusters of office buildings. Notable points of interest in Windsor include the historic district along Route 159 and the Rainbow Reservoir, where there is a boat launch and fishing. Windsor is also home to Loomis Chaffee, a college preparatory school.

Early on, Windsor’s economy was dominated by tobacco farming. The first tobacco crop was planted in 1640. Many of the tobacco plantations have since been redeveloped for recreational use or for office and business parks. Another significant industry during the late 1600s was brick making. At its peak there were more than 40 brickyards operating in Windsor. In the early 1800s and early 1900s, both woolen and paper mills established along the Farmington River in Windsor which provided employment for nearly 500 people. Additionally, Sage Park offered horse racing in the early 1900s. Today, the Day Hill Road area is known primarily as Windsor’s corporate area; however, other business centers include New England Tradeport, Kennedy Industry Park and Kennedy Business Park, all close to Bradley International Airport and the Addison Road Industrial Park. Windsor’s primary industries include shade-grown tobacco, computer software development and precision manufacturing.

Windsor’s enduring manufacturing and construction history, where use of asbestos products was frequent, puts workers in Windsor at risk for asbestos-related diseases. If you have been diagnosed with mesothelioma in Windsor, you may benefit from contacting Dr. Raphael Bueno. Additionally, mesothelioma lawyers may be able to give guidance if you were exposed to asbestos in Windsor and then diagnosed with mesothelioma.
