04. Asbestos Use in Windsor

Asbestos Use in Windsor, Connecticut

Asbestos was frequently used in the manufacturing industries in Windsor, Connecticut. For example, the Combustion Engineering facility in Windsor manufactured boilers with asbestos products on site. Boiler workers, repairmen and other tradesmen were exposed to the asbestos used in this facility.

Windsor is also a short distance from Bradley International Airport in Windsor Locks, Connecticut. Aircraft mechanics employed at the airport were exposed to asbestos products in brakes and landing gear systems while servicing the aircrafts.

Many workers around Windsor may have experienced occupational asbestos exposure at these and other jobsites.

Asbestos Found at Combustion Engineering in Windsor, Connecticut

Construction at the Combustion Engineering jobsite in Windsor began in 1955. The facility employed thousands of workers. The company manufactured fuel burning equipment including industrial boilers, stokers and dryers. These boilers and heat systems contained asbestos insulation. Boilermakers and other tradesmen who worked around the Combustion Engineering facility were exposed to harmful asbestos products.

The U.S. Department of Energy performed an environmental investigation of the Combustion Engineering Windsor facility in 1994. The investigators recommended a thorough cleanup of the property to adhere to environmental regulations and standards. As a result, the buildings and facilities were demolished by 2012.

Combustion Engineering boilers were linked to a machinist’s asbestos exposure and pleural mesothelioma case. The victim was exposed to asbestos insulation in Combustion Engineering boilers during his 39-year career, which later resulted in his death in 1998. High levels of the same asbestos used in the company’s boilers were also present in the worker’s lungs. Any level of asbestos exposure can lead to an asbestos-related illness. The jury ruled in favor of the victim’s wife after his death, awarding her $1.05 million.

Since the 1970s, thousands of mesothelioma lawsuits have been filed against Combustion Engineering. Some of these cases have resulted in large settlement amounts and jury awards for victims of exposure.

Due to the high volume of cases, the company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in 2003 and established an asbestos bankruptcy trust. The trust compensates victims who were exposed to the company’s asbestos products. The trust is still operational, paying clients who meet the exposure and diagnosis requirements.

Victims exposed to Combustion Engineering boilers and facilities with an asbestos-related illness should speak with a lawyer to understand their eligibility for compensation.
