Hartford, the capital of Connecticut, is the state’s third-largest city and one of the country’s oldest. Hartford was originally settled in 1623 as a Dutch trading post; eventually, the first English settlers renamed the settlement in 1636 to Hartford, after Hertford, England. In 1639, the Hartford colony was the first to adopt The Fundamental Orders which was the first document in history to establish a government by consent of the people. Some of the principles contained in the document were applied in the authoring of the United States Constitution, earning Connecticut its nickname, “The Constitution State”. Hartford grew and prospered as immigrants came to work, build and settle in the community. This ethnic and cultural diversity continues to be a prominent piece of Hartford’s heritage and one of the city’s notable assets.

Hartford’s contributions to industry began at the outset of its settlement. Hartford’s location along the Connecticut River made it an import trading center. Ships from Hartford routinely set sail to England, the West Indies and the Far East transporting goods including spices, coffee, and rum. As the trade industry thrived, particular concern mounted amongst the merchants due to the inevitable risk and threats such as fires, pirates, and storms. Thus, the insurance industry was born when groups of merchants began to share these risks. In 1810, the Hartford Fire Insurance Group (the nation’s oldest insurance company operating today as the Hartford Insurance Company) was established to formalize this practice. Hartford remains the center of the insurance industry, known today as the “Insurance Capital of the World”, and is still home base to prominent insurance companies like Aetna and the Hartford Steam Boiler. Other contributions to industry occurred during the nineteenth- and early-twentieth-century, as Hartford endured a rich manufacturing and publishing history with companies like Pope Manufacturing Company, U.S. Fire Arms, United Technologies and Colt Firearms. In 1855, Samuel Colt opened his new Colt Firearms manufacturing facility in Hartford, where he created the basis for current assembly line manufacturing practices. These new techniques used in his firearms factory made mass production possible and laid the groundwork for Hartford’s pre-eminence in the area of precision manufacturing.
