Staten Island is one of the five boroughs of New York City in the state of New York. Although third largest of the boroughs in land area, it is the least populous, with just under 492,000 residents. It is also the most suburban in character, with neighborhoods of historic Victorian homes on the North Shore, and post-war-style residences on the South Shore. Staten Island’s cultural attractions, including the National Lighthouse Museum, Staten Island Zoo, and Staten Island Botanical Garden.
The first permanent Dutch settlement on the island was made in 1661; it was incorporated into New York City as the borough of Richmond in 1898. It was renamed Staten Island in 1975. Originally, much of Staten Island was settled as dairy and poultry farms. Beer brewing was an important industry beginning in 1815. The 1850s brought a flurry of new brewhouses: Bachmann’s Brewery, Constanz Brewery, and Bechtel’s Brewery. Rubsam & Horrmann’s Atlantic Brewing Company followed in 1870. The industry was crippled by Prohibition in the 1920s, and in 1963, the last of the four companies, Rubsam & Horrmann’s, closed for good. Linseed oil and its products were also important commodities in the early 20th century. The American Linseed Company produced linseed oil, cake and meal. The American Linoleum Manufacturing Company, established in 1872, was the first U.S. manufacturer of linoleum flooring, of which linseed oil was a key component. Although Staten Island retains some manufacturing, the economy has turned more towards the service, retail and tourism sectors in recent years.
Staten Island’s history of manufacturing and legacy of historic structures make asbestos exposure an ongoing concern.
