Brooklyn is a borough of New York City, New York and occupies present-day Kings County. Brooklyn has approximately 2.5 million residents, making it the state’s most populous county. Brooklyn sits on the western end of Long Island, where the Hudson River empties into the Atlantic Ocean. Its proximity to Manhattan and East Coast shipping lanes has shaped Brooklyn’s economy, which at one time depended heavily on manufacturing, particularly shipbuilding. Today, more than half of Brooklyn’s residents work outside the borough, and the economy has become more service-based. Notable attractions include the Coney Island amusement area, with its recently rebuilt Luna Park, 19th-century Green-Wood Cemetery, and 585-acre Prospect Park.

Dutch settlers established the village of Breukelen in 1646. Over time, the name evolved to its present spelling of Brooklyn. The Brooklyn Navy Yard, also known as the New York Naval Shipyard, was established in 1801. By World War II, the yard included a railroad spur, radio station, four dry-docks, foundries and machine shops. The Navy Yard was the largest employer in Brooklyn for many years. Following the yard’s decommissioning in 1966, other businesses have occupied the site, including Seatrain Shipbuilding, industrial design firms and artists’ studios. Sugar refining was also a major industry beginning in 1730. By 1887, American Sugar Refining Company and other Brooklyn companies were processing 68 percent of the country’s raw imported sugar. The Domino Sugar sign was a Brooklyn landmark for generations, as was that of Kentile Floors, Inc., a flooring manufacturer that operated from 1898-1992. Brooklyn’s manufacturing base has declined somewhat, as finance, high-tech and entertainment industries have become more prominent, but many specialty manufacturers remain, turning out furniture, clothing, metal goods, and food products. In 2007, pharmaceutical manufacturer Pfizer closed its original plant, which had operated continuously in Brooklyn since 1849.

Brooklyn has a substantial history of manufacturing and construction where asbestos-containing materials were frequently used. Workers exposed to asbestos in Brooklyn are at risk for mesothelioma cancer. We provide information about mesothelioma treatment options in and around Brooklyn at the bottom of this page. If you were exposed to asbestos in Brooklyn, you may benefit from seeking the advice of an asbestos lawyer.
