Asbestos Use in Staten Island, New York

Residents of Staten Island apartments may be at risk of asbestos exposure. Many buildings in the city were constructed using materials containing asbestos. As asbestos materials age or are disturbed, dangerous fibers may be released into the air. Residents and workers are then at risk of ingesting or inhaling these fibers.

Landlords and inspectors sometimes falsify asbestos inspection reports. As a result, residents may not know they are living with asbestos. Known housing exposure sites in Staten Island include St. George Plaza Apartments, Todt Hill Housing and Stapleton Houses.

Staten Island is also home to several shipyards, where asbestos was used frequently on ships, equipment and products. Shipyard workers at Todd Shipyards and Bethlehem Steel Shipyard may have been exposed to dangerous levels of asbestos and could develop mesothelioma.

Asbestos Found in Staten Island, New York

In 2007, a renovation crew was exposed unknowingly to asbestos at Staten Island’s century-old Borough Hall. The workers pulled up carpet and floor tiles, hauling away garbage bags full of debris.

Work came to a halt when the borough’s environmental engineer recognized that the tiles might contain asbestos. The tiles were later tested and found to have dangerously high levels of asbestos. The renovation crew felt they should have been warned about the potential exposure. As a result, the workers took the city to court seeking compensation.

In 2014, a plumber was allegedly fired from his job at Richmond University Medical Center in Staten Island for expressing concerns about asbestos exposure. The plumber was ridiculed for requesting protective gear and threatened with termination. His supervisors claimed it would be too expensive to remove exposed asbestos found in the plumbing shop area. Asbestos exposure put the plumber at risk for developing mesothelioma, which prompted him to seek legal action.
