Asbestos at Johns-Manville Plant in Pittsburg, California

Johns-Manville was one of the nation’s largest manufacturers of construction products. Many of the company’s products contained asbestos. Johns-Manville operated a plant in Pittsburg. The Pittsburg plant produced industrial products. Individuals employed at this manufacturing facility may have been exposed to asbestos. This exposure puts them at risk for mesothelioma.

A plant manager at the Johns-Manville Pittsburg site testified that, prior to 1971, the company had a policy “of not telling workers if their biennial company physical showed signs of asbestosis or asbestos-induced lung cancer.” This policy was evidence that the company was aware of the dangers asbestos posed to its plant workers. However, the company did not warn its employees, nor provide them with adequate protection against these dangers.

By the late 1970s, Johns-Manville faced upward of 1,500 mesothelioma and asbestos lawsuits. By 1982, Johns-Manville filed for bankruptcy, with more than 9,000 lawsuits filed against them.

The Johns-Manville Asbestos Trust Fund became operational in 1988. Within four years, there were more than 190,000 claims filed against the trust.
