Asbestos Found in Fremont, California General Motors Plant

General Motors’ Fremont assembly plant was the town’s largest employer, providing work for thousands of residents. At its peak, the Fremont plant employed 6,800 full-time workers and produced more than 1,000 automobiles each day.

The plant opened in September of 1962, producing the first vehicle in May of 1963. The assembly line production of General Motors products continued until March of 1982, when the plant closed and was refurbished under different manufacturing ownership.

General Motors manufactured automobiles, brakes, brake linings and clutch linings. Asbestos was frequently used in the manufacturing of these products until the early 1980s to reduce heat and friction. Workers at the Fremont plant may have been exposed to asbestos while:

  • Manufacturing and repairing auto parts
  • Servicing and repairing automobiles
  • Working the assembly lines

Individuals who repaired and serviced these parts, including auto mechanics, may have been exposed to asbestos dust. Individuals may have inhaled the asbestos fibers released from this work. These employees were put at an increased risk of developing asbestos-related illnesses, such as mesothelioma.
