04. Asbestos Use in Newport News

Asbestos Use in Newport News, Virginia

Newport News is famous for its long history of shipbuilding, which dates back to 1886. At that time, the largest private shipyard in the U.S., Newport News Shipbuilding and Drydock Company, was established.

Since then, more than 30 of the U.S. Navy’s aircraft carriers and dozens of other vessels have been built in Newport News. Asbestos was commonly used in military vessels for its fireproofing and heat-resistant qualities. Shipbuilders and other tradesman were exposed to asbestos daily while constructing and repairing vessels at the Newport News shipyards.

Asbestos at Newport News Shipbuilding in Newport News, Virginia

The company, now known as Newport News Shipbuilding, is the largest industrial employer in the state of Virginia. It is a division of Huntington Ingalls Industries. The company employs over 25,000 men and women, many of whom are third- and fourth-generation shipbuilders.

For decades, shipbuilders and other asbestos workers were exposed to very large quantities of the mineral. Asbestos was used extensively in naval vessels. The mineral could be found in components like gaskets, pipe covering, valves and boilers. Engine rooms were full of asbestos, because of the great heat generated by propulsion equipment. Notable asbestos suppliers to Newport News Shipbuilding include Babcock & Wilcox, Johns-Manville and Pittsburgh Corning Corporation.

Shipbuilders and other tradesmen at Newport News were exposed to asbestos during their daily activities. For example, some workers were responsible for cutting asbestos-containing insulation, removing it and installing new asbestos insulation. This created airborne asbestos dust, which shipyard workers breathed in daily.

The shipyard used products from multiple asbestos companies in the construction and repair of dozens of vessels. Because of this extensive use, over 15 bankrupt companies with asbestos trusts list Newport News Shipbuilding as an asbestos jobsite. This means Newport News asbestos victims can cite this approved jobsite when they submit a claim.

Several of the vessels that went through the shipyard are also approved jobsites for certain trusts. In addition to bankrupt companies, there are many solvent companies whose asbestos products were used in various ships built at Newport News.

Individuals with mesothelioma who were exposed to asbestos at the Newport News shipyard may be eligible for compensation. Experienced asbestos attorneys can help determine the best ways to receive compensation, including filing a lawsuit or asbestos trust claim.
