In 1880, the Northern Pacific Railroad Company began work on a rail line through Spokane Falls, as it was then known, and the U.S. Army established Camp Spokane nearby. After the railroad’s completion in 1881, Spokane quickly became a commercial and shipping center. Despite an 1889 fire which consumed the downtown business district, Spokane continued to grow. In 1892, the Great Northern Railway set up shops and yards in nearby Hillyard Township, which was annexed to Spokane in 1924. The Potlatch Corporation was founded in 1903, incorporating forest management, lumber milling and finished wood products manufacturing. The Carnation Milk Products Company acquired two Spokane dairies in the 1920s, and by 1947 was the city’s largest milk distributor. Carnation was acquired by Nestle in 1985, and the Spokane plant sold in 1989. The city hosted a World’s Fair in 1974, and in recent years has focused on redevelopment in the downtown area, building a concert hall and restoring a vintage hotel and theater.
Spokane has a lengthy history of manufacturing and construction, much of it concentrated during a period when asbestos-containing products were widely used. Workers and their loved ones who have been exposed to asbestos may be at risk for mesothelioma and other asbestos-related diseases. If you were diagnosed with mesothelioma in Spokane, you may also benefit from seeking the advice of a mesothelioma lawyer.
