Asbestos Found at American Cyanamid Company in Wallingford, Connecticut

The American Cyanamid Company branch in Wallingford was built in 1941. Asbestos was widely used throughout chemical plants for its properties of chemical durability and resistance. The American Cyanamid Company plant consisted of 35 buildings on 250 acres. In 1941, approximately 300 workers were employed at the plant. Employment expanded to approximately 1,200 in the early 1970s.

The company originally manufactured agricultural chemicals, such as cyanamide for fertilizer. It expanded to manufacture home and building products, pharmaceuticals, surgical products and plastics.
