Millboard

Asbestos Used By Many American Companies

Had it not been for the discovery of its poisonous nature, asbestos would most likely still be commonly used by manufacturers throughout the United States. The mineral was mined and processed by hundreds of American companies for nearly a century before its toxicity was revealed. Scientist were able to link exposure to the fibrous material with damage to the lungs, pulmonary diseases and an often deadly type of cancer, mesothelioma including pericardial mesothelioma.

These health-related issues are brought on when people breathe in small amounts of asbestos. This is not done intentionally; the particles are too small to be seen by the human eye. Many years after this unknowing exposure, the problems it causes start to develop. It can take decades between initial contact with these poisonous fibers and the diagnosis of asbestos-related disease.

Millboard Information and its Risks

Millboard is a thick, square piece of asbestos based insulation that was used in walls, furnaces, fire screens and in other areas where large amounts of heat were produced. When it is in good condition, a piece of millboard is not hazardous in any way, but if it is cut, sanded or ripped, then tiny amounts of the internal materials are usually released. After this occurs, the danger mounts. Workers installing the insulation, or people who are in areas where damaged boards are present become likely to ingest the potentially lethal particles as they float in the air.

When studies began to show the dangers of asbestos exposure, most manufacturers stopped using it. Some, however, continued to employ the very profitable mineral. This was made even worse by the fact that employees and installers handling these products were not furnished with appropriate protective gear. Had such gear been used, many might have been spared the pain of diseases like mesothelioma. There is no mesothelioma cure but there are very good mesothelioma cancer centers throughout the country that offer advanced treatment for the disease including mesothelioma radiation, brachytherapy, gene therapy, immunotherapy and multi-modality therapy. While the mesothelioma doctors at these centers can do much to improve quality of life for victims of this disease, the overall life expectancy can still be short. Our mesothelioma treatment guide offers much more information on the subject.

Legal Compensation Information

Many people were harmed because of products like millboard that contained asbestos. A large percentage of them filed lawsuits against the companies that produced these goods with the help of mesothelioma attorneys, and demanded monetary compensation. The large number of claims led most of the manufacturers to seek out bankruptcy protection, which freed them of debt in exchange for establishing a trust fund to pay victims with valid cases. To help ensure that people would no longer have to be concerned about contaminated goods, the Environmental Protection Agency banned the use of asbestos, and many of the products that were in use were removed and disposed of by certified personnel who were qualified to deal with hazardous materials. Since asbestos insulation was so commonly used, it may still exist in public locations. It still poses a health hazard if it is not completely intact. If you find any potentially dangerous materials, contact a professional who is trained to deal with them safely.
