Asbestos Exposure in Waco, TX

Situated along the Brazos River between Dallas and Austin on Interstate Highway 35, in heart of the Texas manufacturing and technology corridor, is the city of Waco, Texas. Founded in 1849, Waco is a city in and the county seat of McLennan County. It is home to more than 126,000 residents and offers big city amenities without the big city hassles. The historic Suspension Bridge, completed in 1870, is the centerpiece of Waco and is surrounded by city parks. Since 1971, the bridge has been open only to pedestrian traffic and is in the National Register of Historic Places.

As the 20th century approached, Waco was one of the world's leading producers of cotton. By 1900, the city had 163 factories and six banks and was continuing to expand. World War II revived demand for cotton and cotton products and by 1942 Waco was the armed forces' leading manufacturer of cots, tents, mattresses and barracks bags. The Waco Urban Renewal Project began in 1958 to deal with the problem of inner-city blight. By 1978 the Urban Renewal Project helped funnel more than $125 million into renovating the city's urban core. Though Waco's economy suffered a downturn in the late 1980s and early 1990s, the city worked to bring tourist dollars into the area by building a zoo at Cameron Park and attracting the Texas Sports Hall of Fame. Today, top employers in Waco include Baylor University, Waco Independent School District, Hillcrest Health System, and Sanderson Farms, Inc.
