Asbestos Exposure, Mesothelioma Doctors and Lawyers in Lufkin, Texas

Lufkin, a city in and the county seat of Angelina County, is situated in the heart of the Forest Country of East Texas. Founded in 1882 as a stop on the Houston, East and West Texas Railway, Lufkin was named for Captain Abraham P. Lufkin, a Galveston cotton merchant and city councilman. Lufkin's population reached nearly 33,000 in 2000 making it the 76th largest city in Texas. Despite is size, Lufkin remains quaint while serving as a regional hub for retail shopping, medical facilities, industry, and government.

Up until the 1930s, Lufkin's initial growth both economically and as a community was largely due to its proximity to the railroad and because of the timber boom in the surrounding area. During 1938 and 1945, a period often referred to as city's "golden era of expansion", industrial expansion produced thousands of new jobs and continued widespread community growth. Southland Paper Mills (now Abitibi) and Texas Foundries, both founded in the late 1930s, were two of the local companies responsible for much of the city's industrial growth. Another significant employer in Lufkin's history, was Lufkin Foundry and Machine Company (now Lufkin Industries). Lufkin Foundry was founded in 1902 to service the repair needs of the railroads and sawmills. The company would achieve worldwide acclaim for its oilfield pumping units. Though Lufkin's economy was still largely tied to the harvesting of timber and the manufacture of lumber, paper, plywood, and other forest products through the 1980s, by 1990 the city had developed a diversified economic base, including the manufacture of machinery and gears, truck trailers and flooring, foundry products, candy, dairy products, and recreational goods.
