Galveston Overview

Soon after Galveston was settled in the early 1800s, the Port of Galveston was established and became one of the largest ports in the United States and the oldest port in the Gulf of Mexico west of New Orleans. During this century, Galveston became a major commercial center and served as a leader in the state’s growth; it was the first city to have a post office, naval base, hospital, grocery store, telephone, and medical college. At the turn of the century, on September 8, 1900, a hurricane hit and devastated the island leveling many blocks and taking more than 6,000 lives. Despite the loss, Galvestonians quickly began rebuilding their Island. Then again on September 13, 2008 another natural disaster, Hurricane Ike, struck the island–80 percent of the Island homes and buildings were affected by rising water and wind damage. Subsequently, Galveston has made recovery, reconstruction and diversification of the Island’s tax base a priority. The pillars of Galveston’s economic base include the Port of Galveston and maritime businesses, the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston, and tourism. Other industries that contribute to the city’s strong, diverse economy include education, banking, and insurance.
