Texas Stadium was completed in 1971 as the home field of the Dallas Cowboys (until the new Cowboys Stadium opened in Arlington in 2009). In 1990, Irving’s population was 155,037 and the city had 3,004 rated businesses. By 2000, the population reached 191,615 with 7,998 businesses. Accordingly homes, schools, shopping areas, and recreation facilities were constructed to support the growing community. Today, Irving is home to thousands of corporations and the global headquarters of five Fortune-500 companies. Some of the city's top employers include Citigroup, Inc., Verizon, Nokia, Allstate, Central Freight Lines, Abbott Laboratories and Microsoft.
