Asbestos in Manufacturing Facilities in Worcester, Massachusetts

Worcester was a major manufacturing center during the 20th century. At that time, asbestos use in products and equipment was prevalent. The mineral was used for its durability and resistance to high temperatures. Laborers and other tradesmen who worked at asbestos sites around Worcester experienced exposure, which put them at risk of asbestos-related diseases.

One of the larger manufacturing companies in Worcester known for asbestos use was the Norton Company. As early as 1885, Norton Company was one of the country’s most successful manufacturers of grinding tools. By 1920, it was one of the 400 largest industrial companies in the United States. At Norton Company’s peak in 1952, it employed 5,500 workers, many who lived close enough to walk to work.

Norton Company expanded its offerings to include other products, including coated abrasives and sandpapers. The company admitted that up until 1980, asbestos was used to strengthen some of their grinding wheels. Additionally, within the factory buildings, equipment including steam pipes and boilers were covered in insulation containing asbestos. Many of Norton Company’s employees may have experienced asbestos exposure as result of the company’s use of the mineral.

In 1990, Saint-Gobain of France purchased the locally owned Norton Company. It remains one of Worcester’s top employers and its largest industrial company.
