04. Asbestos Use in Quincy

Asbestos Use in Quincy, Massachusetts

Located just south of Boston, Quincy has a long history as a manufacturing, heavy industrial and shipbuilding center. Asbestos use was widespread in these industries. One of the jobsites in Quincy known for its use of asbestos was the Fore River Shipyard. Asbestos was used during construction, repair and modernization of ships.

Asbestos at Fore River Shipyard in Quincy, Massachusetts

Asbestos use at the Fore River Shipyard in Quincy, Massachusetts, is well documented.

Fore River Shipyard began operations in 1883 along the Weymouth Fore River. Within six years of its founding, the shipyard received its first naval contract: the destroyer USS Lawrence.

Although the shipyard changed ownership several times, it became the second largest shipyard in the country. It was purchased by Bethlehem Steel in 1913 and then sold to General Dynamics in 1963.

Over the decades, shipyard workers at Fore River Shipyard built hundreds of ships, including freighters, submarines, destroyer escorts and aircraft carriers. Fore River Shipyard may be best known for its work in naval shipbuilding. For many years, the Navy required asbestos use in its vessels.

Asbestos is cheap, reliable, fire-resistant and can withstand high temperatures. Due to these properties, the mineral was used in boilers, pumps, turbines and other heavy-duty equipment on ships for safe operation. Asbestos insulation was used throughout the interior ship walls, on pipes and in boiler rooms.

Small areas and poor ventilation below deck led to greater risk of asbestos exposure. As a result, shipyard workers are among the most at risk of developing mesothelioma and other asbestos diseases. This includes pipefitters, boilermakers, insulators and other tradesmen.

Fore River Shipyard’s greatest periods of expansion occurred during both World Wars. By the end of World War I, Fore River had built 71 destroyers, surpassing all other United States shipyards combined. In total during World War II, Fore River Shipyard employed approximately 32,000 workers. All of those workers may have been exposed to asbestos.
