Destroyers were efficient naval vessels that were usually deployed ahead of the main fleet to provide protection. Asbestos use on destroyers continued until the late 1970s. Asbestos-containing destroyers include the USS Allen M. Sumner and the USS Hamner. The use of asbestos put Navy veterans and others at risk of developing mesothelioma.

01. Destroyer History

History of Destroyers

The name “destroyer” first emerged in the late 19th century. Early destroyers, such as the USS Bainbridge, were sent to incapacitate torpedo boats. This protected the rest of the ships in the fleet.

By the time the United States joined World War I (WWI), the Navy fleet developed other classes of destroyers, including Truxtun, Smith, Paulding and Cassin.

Gridley, Bagley and other destroyer classes were commissioned and launched before World War II (WWII). During World War II alone, the United States had approximately 377 active destroyers. Throughout other war efforts, the Navy continued to develop and commission other classes of destroyers.

During these years until the late 1970s, many of these Navy destroyers contained asbestos. Because of the function of destroyers, it was important for them to have heat and fire resistance. Because asbestos was an efficient fire retardant, various asbestos materials were used throughout destroyers.

Modern-guided missile destroyers, such as Arleigh Burke-class vessels and Zumwalt-class multi-mission vessels, use alternative materials to protect sailors from the risks of fire.

Notable Destroyers

Destroyers have played a vital role in U.S. Navy operations for more than a century. Because of the function of this type of ship, destroyers needed to be fire-resistant. For decades, many of the destroyers commissioned and built by the Navy had asbestos-containing materials. The USS Benner and USS Chevalier are two well-known destroyers built with asbestos products.

USS Benner

The USS Benner was a Gearing class destroyer, which began its service at the end of WWII. The destroyer was named after Marine Second Lieutenant Stanley G. Benner, who was killed in 1942 at the Battle of Guadalcanal. Construction took place at Bath Iron Works in Maine. This shipbuilding company was known for using asbestos insulation, boilers, gaskets and other asbestos materials.

Quick Ship Facts
  • Ship’s Name: USS Benner
  • Year Built: 1944
  • Years In Service: 1944 – 1970

USS Benner was launched on November 30th, 1944. USS Benner’s initial voyage took her to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba and Gonaïves Bay, Haiti. She sailed through the Panama Canal on June 2, 1945.

A 1946 memorandum from the U.S. Navy records some of the asbestos use on USS Benner. At the time, the Navy ordered new asbestos deck matting for the ship.

USS Benner played a substantial role in military operations after WWII. She took part in an initiative to defuse tensions during the Chinese civil war and became a popular training vessel in the 1950s. In 1956, USS Benner was reassigned to the Pacific Fleet, and she subsequently spent time in Guam, Japan and Manus. She also participated in Operation Hardtack I on April 29, 1958.

In the 1960s, USS Benner received enemy fire during the Vietnam War. She successfully defended herself, however, and continued to pursue military targets. USS Benner was later decommissioned in November 1970.

USS Chevalier

USS Chevalier was a Gearing-class destroyer launched in 1944 by Bath Iron Works. The ship started active service in 1945. Bath Iron Works was known for its use of asbestos on ships. Records state the company began using asbestos in ship construction by the 1940s. As a result, the USS Chevalier contained various asbestos components.

Quick Ship Facts
  • Ship’s Name: USS Chevalier
  • Year Built: 1945
  • Years In Service: 1945 – 1975

USS Chevalier played an active role in war efforts, including World War II and the Korean War.

One Navy veteran described his experience serving on the USS Chevalier during the Korean War. The veteran was on active duty from March 1950 to November 1953.

The veteran stated he and others on the ship wore asbestos gloves to remove the hot shell castings from the ship’s guns. He also reported the use of asbestos throughout the ship, including the sleeping quarters. The veteran claimed pipes insulated with asbestos ran throughout the quarters. When the ship was attacked, “these quarters looked as if it had snowed in them.”

The US military built hundreds of destroyers between 1900 and 2000. Many of the destroyers commissioned and built before the late 1970s contained asbestos. The table below lists all U.S. Navy destroyers, including their years of service and status.

03. Destroyers & Asbestos

Asbestos Use on Destroyers

Because of its status as a highly effective, fire-retardant material, asbestos was a common substance on 20th century Navy destroyers. Deck matting, insulation, cables, caulk, paneling and roofing materials all frequently contained asbestos. Ships’ boilers and engine rooms were also high-risk areas for exposure. Many vessels used asbestos insulation throughout.

Asbestos use extended beyond construction. For instance, Navy personnel sometimes wore asbestos gun mittens to prevent burns when using machine guns or handling shells.

Veterans and crew members risked asbestos exposure on destroyers whenever the asbestos materials were disturbed. This could happen when the ships took damage during war efforts, other wear and tear or repairs.

04. Asbestos Exposure on Destroyers

Who Was at Risk of Asbestos Exposure on Destroyers?

The presence of asbestos on Navy destroyers has affected many different people. Veterans and civilians alike faced exposure while serving on destroyers or repairing the ships at shipyards. Some of these individuals have developed mesothelioma and other asbestos-related diseases years after exposure.

Some trades that risked asbestos exposure on destroyers include:

Workers involved in retrofitting Navy destroyers were particularly at risk because they would frequently disturb old asbestos materials in the process.

05. Compensation Options

Compensation for People Exposed on Destroyers

Civilians and veterans who develop mesothelioma or other medical conditions related to asbestos exposure can seek financial compensation. For instance, veterans or their surviving loved ones may be eligible for VA benefits, including different types of monetary benefits.

Individuals may also be eligible to file a mesothelioma lawsuit or asbestos claims. Those who faced asbestos exposure on a destroyer and later developed an asbestos-related disease should talk to a lawyer about their options. An experienced lawyer can explain an individual’s eligibility, filing options and help with the entire process.
