Located in northeastern Pennsylvania, Scranton is a city in and the county seat of Lackawanna County. It is also the largest principal city in the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre metropolitan area. Incorporated as a borough in 1856, and as a city in 1866, Scranton is home to more than 76,000 people making it Pennsylvania’s sixth-most-populous city after Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Allentown, Erie, and Reading as well as the geographic and cultural center of the Lackawanna River valley. Many of Scranton’s attractions celebrate its heritage as an industrial center in iron production and anthracite coal mining such as The Scranton Iron Furnaces, the Lackawanna Steel Company, and the Steamtown National Historic Site, the Electric City Trolley Museum, and the Lackawanna Coal Mine Tour at McDade Park.

Scranton Overview

The city grew steadily in the late 19th and early 20th centuries; Scranton forged ahead as the center of coal mining and railroads, which were vital to the expanding industry in this part of the country. Another significant industry during this time was the silk textile industry. After World War II, the fortunes and population of Scranton (and the rest of Lackawanna and Luzerne Counties) began to diminish. Coal production and rail traffic declined rapidly throughout the 1950s. During the latter half of the 20th century, silk and other textile industries shrunk as jobs moved south or overseas; and many downtown storefronts and theaters became vacant as suburban shopping malls became the dominant venues for shopping and entertainment. In recent years, however, property values have increased as Scranton is gaining employers. Also, revitalization and redevelopment efforts from both the local government and the local community have been made since the mid-1980s.

We have confirmed that Scranton has many jobsites where exposure to asbestos-containing products occurred, particularly in the coal and textile industries. Workers exposed to asbestos may be at risk to develop an asbestos-related cancer.
