Asbestos at the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland

In 1995, asbestos sheeting material was found at the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis. In the first incident, workers discovered sheeting material containing about 80% asbestos that was used for several years at the Naval Academy. The sheeting material was used to make gaskets for pipework at the academy. Approximately 40 workers used the material and did not take proper precautions.

The asbestos was found in the Naval Academy’s mechanical rooms and heating plants. Workers may have inhaled asbestos dust on the jobsite. Asbestos fibers can adhere to clothing, which may have also exposed family members at home.

Asbestos may still remain in older buildings at the Naval Academy today. A 2019 report mentioned asbestos in condemned offices at Dahlgren Hall.

Asbestos-related illnesses such as mesothelioma may take years to develop after exposure. As a result, workers exposed to asbestos may wish to seek regular check-ups to diagnose any symptoms early.
