Baltimore is a city on the Chesapeake Bay in Maryland. With a population of just over 620,900, Baltimore is the largest city in Maryland, and is considered an independent city, as it is not associated with a county. At one time, Baltimore was a major industrial center and port of entry on the East Coast. Although manufacturing has declined somewhat, the finance, health care and professional sectors have expanded. Notable employers in Baltimore include Johns Hopkins Hospital, Constellation Energy, DAP and Under Armour.

The Port of Baltimore was opened in 1706 to facilitate the tobacco trade. The Town of Baltimore was founded in 1729. Sugar cane farming was a profitable early industry for Baltimore. Following the War of 1812, the population increased, leading to an increase in manufacturing. Baltimore had many food-related industries, including the Platt Oyster Cannery, whose original building is now part of The Baltimore Museum of History. ESSKAY began producing meat products in 1858. The Domino Sugar Refinery ceased operations in Baltimore in 2003, but the neon sign which has been a local landmark for decades still shines atop the 1884 factory building. In 1887, Maryland Steel built a shipyard at nearby Sparrows Point. The yard was acquired by Bethlehem Shipbuilding Corporation in 1914. During World War II, they operated an emergency yard in Baltimore itself, the Bethlehem Fairfield Shipyard. Procter and Gamble operated a 13-acre manufacturing complex from 1929 until 1999.

Baltimore has a lengthy history of manufacturing in industries known for their use of asbestos-containing materials. Exposure to asbestos is a source of concern for workers, who may be at risk for asbestos cancers, such as mesothelioma. If you were diagnosed with mesothelioma in Baltimore, you may also benefit from seeking the advice of an experienced mesothelioma lawyer.
