04. Asbestos Use in Long Beach

Asbestos Use in Long Beach, California

Prior to the 1980s, asbestos was routinely used in jobsites around Long Beach. The mineral was used because of its flexibility, strength and resistance to heat. Asbestos regulations in the late 1970s and early 1980s began to curb the use of the mineral nationally.

Now, many companies who used asbestos can be held at fault for wrongful exposure resulting in asbestos-related diseases. Long Beach asbestos exposure occurred at plants run by many companies, including:

The mineral was present in brake linings, insulation, cement and other industrial products. As a result of this widespread use, workers in many occupations were exposed to asbestos.

For example, air samples taken in 1967 at the Johns-Manville plant in Long Beach found dangerous levels of asbestos. Eleven samples taken from the plant exceeded the proposed threshold limit for asbestos set by government agencies. As a result, many workers may have faced dangerous exposure.

Asbestos use was also common at other jobsites, including military shipyards.

Mesothelioma Risk at Long Beach, California Naval Shipyard

Long Beach is home to several shipyards, including Bethlehem Steel Shipyard, Todd Shipyard and the Long Beach Naval Shipyard. Many of these shipyards were extremely active during the wars of the 20th century and used asbestos frequently during ship construction. The shipbuilding industry relied heavily on asbestos for use in ship walls, boilers, turbines, pumps, pipes and more.

Long Beach Naval Shipyard operated from 1940 to 1997. It was primarily involved in ship repair. During World War II, the shipyard overhauled or repaired more than 300 vessels, including battleships, heavy and light cruisers, destroyers, destroyer escorts and oilers. After the war, shipyard workers helped deactivate, convert or sell ships.

Medical studies have examined the incidence of asbestos diseases at the Long Beach Naval Shipyard. Results have found increased levels of exposure and disease.

  • In 1979, more than 6,600 workers at the Long Beach Shipyard received chest X-rays to determine the extent of asbestos exposure and related changes in the body. There were abnormal results for 1,061 of the tested workers. Asbestos concentrations in workers’ bodies increased with years of exposure. The study found evidence of workers with pulmonary fibrosis, asbestosis and other asbestos-related diseases.
  • A 2016 study looked at 13,924 workers employed at Long Beach Naval Shipyard between 1978 and 1985. Researchers grouped the workers according to low, intermediate and high levels of asbestos exposure. They found employment at the shipyard increased the risk of asbestos-related malignancies. There was an increased incidence of mesothelioma among all three levels of asbestos exposure when compared to the general population.

These studies show how veterans, crew members and shipyard workers were in frequent contact with asbestos. Individuals who may have been exposed under these conditions should contact a mesothelioma doctor and lawyer to determine their options.
