Asbestos Use in Linden, New Jersey

The city of Linden is located in Union County and is part of the New York Metropolitan Area. Linden has an industrial history consisting of manufacturing plants for automobiles, power generating stations, pharmaceuticals and other chemical manufacturing facilities. These industries have all historically used asbestos products.

Additionally, Linden is home to large oil refineries. Before the 1980s, refineries often used asbestos for its resistance to heat and chemicals. Oil and petroleum refinery workers therefore risked prolonged asbestos exposure. Because of this exposure, oil refinery workers are at risk of developing mesothelioma.

Asbestos Found in Linden, New Jersey’s Bayway Refinery

The Bayway Refinery, also known as Exxon’s Linden Bayway Refinery, is an oil refinery that converts crude oil into gasoline, diesel fuel, jet fuel, propane and heating oil. It is an important oil supplier for New Jersey and New York. The refinery has been the source of numerous environmental issues and has repeatedly violated environmental regulations.

Asbestos was widely used in oil refineries before the 1980s. Crude oil is highly flammable. Asbestos was used for its heat-resistant qualities in many refinery locations, including boiler rooms and furnaces. Boiler workers, machinists, machine operators, pipefitters, steelworkers and maintenance workers who used this equipment may have been exposed to asbestos, which can cause mesothelioma or other asbestos-related illnesses.

In 2008, a jury awarded the spouse of a former Bayway Refinery worker more than $7 million for secondary asbestos exposure. The woman’s husband was an electrician at the oil refinery from 1975 to 1986. He was responsible for removing insulation to fix pumps and filters. His wife washed his asbestos-laden clothing, which exposed her to the asbestos. As a result of exposure to the asbestos-contaminated clothing, she developed peritoneal mesothelioma. Secondary exposure is one of many ways in which people encounter asbestos.
