Asbestos Found in Saginaw, Michigan Automotive Facilities

In 2019, an abandoned manufacturing facility in Saginaw, Michigan, was demolished. The facility had once been owned by TRW Automotive Holdings Corp. (TRW Automotive). The companies responsible for the demolition failed to properly handle asbestos-containing materials.

Michigan’s Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy fined three companies for alleged asbestos-related violations. One fine was for failing to estimate the amount of asbestos-containing material on site. Neglect during the multistep demolition put workers at risk for inhaling asbestos fibers.

Any type of exposure to asbestos may lead to related illnesses like mesothelioma. After discovering the asbestos, it took nearly three weeks to remove it. The companies involved in the demolition agreed to pay the fines but did not admit to any wrongdoings.

Before the demolition, TRW Automotive produced parts for several GM vehicles. GM has been linked to asbestos-containing auto parts in the past. In Saginaw, several GM facilities are known asbestos exposure sites.
