Chicago, Illinois is the largest city in the midwestern United States, with a population of more than 2.7 million people. Chicago grew as a hub for cross-country trading and business after it was incorporated in 1837. As it grew, the city needed more infrastructure. Asbestos was a common additive in construction materials, industrial machinery, shipbuilding and railroads. Thousands of Chicagoans may have been exposed to the mineral at its peak usage between the early 1900s and 1980. Today, asbestos still poses a health threat around the city.

01. Asbestos Exposure

Asbestos Exposure in Chicago, Illinois

Chicago is a highly industrialized city. Asbestos in Chicago was frequently used for industrial buildings and manufacturing settings, mainly for fireproofing. Though it is no longer used in these settings, asbestos continues to present a health hazard. Asbestos disease symptoms can appear up to 50 years after initial exposure.

There are six types of asbestos, all of which can cause harmful exposure. Chrysotile asbestos was the most common type used in Chicago. It was often used in asbestos-containing materials (ACMs) for construction. These materials may be present in both public and private buildings.

Chicago, Illinois Public Schools and Asbestos

A 2013 report from the Environmental Working Group Action Fund (EWG Action Fund) studied the prevalence of asbestos in Chicago public schools. The report found at least 180 Chicago public schools contained asbestos in dangerous locations and amounts.

A total of 1,174 locations within the public schools had damaged asbestos products or asbestos materials likely to become damaged. For example, classroom floor tiles in Helen M. Hefferan Elementary School in the Westfield Park neighborhood contained asbestos. Inspectors recommended to repair or remove the hazardous materials.

In 2015, EWG released an updated report on asbestos in Chicago public schools. According to the report, only 11 schools had followed asbestos abatement recommendations.

Asbestos was a common component of public building materials, offering flame resistance and strength. Schools contained asbestos in areas such as walls, ceilings, floors, tiles and insulation.

During renovation, these materials may become disturbed. Additionally, asbestos can be vulnerable to damage. As the materials break down, they can release fibers into the air. Once airborne, the fibers may be inhaled or ingested and cause asbestos diseases, such as mesothelioma.

Chicago, Illinois Railroads and Asbestos

Chicago’s central location in the United States made it a hub for rail transport. The city was the starting point for two major rail routes: the Illinois Central Railroad and the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad. Many other railroads ran through the city as well.

Former railroad employees across the country have filed asbestos lawsuits against major Chicago railroad companies, including the Illinois Central Railroad.

Asbestos was used in trains and railroad machinery. For example, locomotive boilers were often coated with asbestos for heat resistance.

Historic photos show workers on the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad applying asbestos mixtures to locomotive boilers. As a result, locomotive engineers and railroad workers may have been exposed to asbestos.

Chicago, Illinois Water and Asbestos

Asbestos in water has long been a worry for Chicago. A 1977 study found asbestos fibers in rainwater. Researchers believe the water became contaminated through wet deposition, meaning airborne asbestos fibers accumulated in the rain. In turn, the affected rainwater may contaminate groundwater and nearby Lake Michigan. Chicago sits on the southern end of Lake Michigan.

Asbestos dumping grounds north of the city on the lakeshore may account for some of the asbestos fibers in Lake Michigan. The dumping ground was a former Johns-Manville site. Johns-Manville was a manufacturer of many asbestos products.

Safety studies at this location revealed dangerous levels of asbestos in the air and groundwater. The lake may carry minerals from this area down to Chicago public beaches and waterways.

A 2008 news report warned Chicago citizens of the dangers posed by the Johns-Manville site to public beaches. According to the report, Chicago’s Illinois Beach State Park and Oak Street Beach had asbestos contamination. Asbestos in water poses the risk of ingestion while visiting the beach.

Asbestos exposure most commonly occurs through inhalation. However, there is evidence ingestion of asbestos fibers can also cause cancer. For example, a 2016 study from Tuscany, Italy found a possible link between asbestos in drinking water and cancer.

In order to mitigate asbestos risk, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) marked the Johns-Manville site for cleanup. Asbestos removal efforts at the site started in 2010. Completion is estimated for late 2022. In the meantime, the site continues to be a health risk.

Other Chicago, Illinois Asbestos Exposure Sites

There are many sites where Chicago citizens and workers may come into contact with asbestos.

Chicago was home to many industrial manufacturing companies during peak asbestos use. The Maremont Corporation was founded in Chicago in 1877. The company manufactured asbestos-containing automobile parts from 1953 to 1978. Employees may have experienced occupational exposure while working for the company. Old Maremont facilities may still contain asbestos.

W.R. Grace & Company has a manufacturing center in Chicago. This company processed several thousand pounds of vermiculite contaminated with amphibole asbestos from Libby, Montana. Workers at the Chicago plant may have come into contact with this asbestos.

Chicago shipbuilding, utility and freight companies may also have exposed individuals to asbestos. Industrial asbestos use largely ended in the early to mid-1980s. However, manufacturing facilities and unrenovated plants may still expose people to the mineral.

Due to the widespread use of asbestos, the following list of exposure sites is not exhaustive.
