Asbestos Use in Kearny, New Jersey

Kearny, New Jersey, has been home to many manufacturing plants that used asbestos. Once the largest employer in Hudson County, Western Electric’s three million-square-foot Kearny Works plant employed thousands of workers during its 59 years of operation. Western Electric manufactured electrical equipment and telephones. Many components in these products contained asbestos. The mineral was used in different machinery and power generating equipment around the plant. Workers at the plant may have been regularly exposed to asbestos. Several asbestos trusts list Kearny Works as an approved jobsite for claim submission.

Many other companies and jobsites in Kearny were known to have exposed workers to asbestos while on the job. Metropolitan Refractories Corporation produced different refractory products, including firebrick and refractory cement. Before the 1980s, both products contained large quantities of asbestos by weight.

Kearny was also home to the Federal Shipbuilding and Drydock Company’s shipyard where many notable U.S. Navy vessels were built during the 1900s. Asbestos was once an important component in naval vessels, so shipbuilders and tradesmen who worked at the shipyard were exposed to asbestos frequently.

Other jobsites in Kearny, including the Kearny Generating Station, put workers at risk of exposure.

Asbestos at the Kearny Generating Station in Kearny, New Jersey

The original Kearny Generating Station was a large power plant that opened in 1925. The five smokestacks of the building along the Hackensack River are a familiar site in South Kearny. It was owned and operated by Public Service Electric & Gas Company (PSE&G) and was once the largest power station in New Jersey.

The Kearny Generating Station employed many workers while it was operational. Workers who operated and performed maintenance on various machinery, including boilers and turbines, were frequently exposed to asbestos. Because electrical generation produces very high temperatures, asbestos was used extensively around the plant in insulation and refractory materials. At least five asbestos trusts list the PSE&G Kearny Generating Station as an approved jobsite for claim submission.
