Gulfport, with a population of nearly 68,000, is the second largest city in Mississippi. Located on the Gulf of Mexico, Gulfport is an active seaport whose activities provide a substantial segment of the city’s economic base. The Gulf Coast, with its miles of beaches, sport fishing, golfing and resort casinos is also a boon to Gulfport’s tourism industry. On nearby Ship Island stands Fort Massachusetts, a brick-built fort constructed after the War of 1812, and preserved as part of the Gulf Coast National Seashore. Gulfport is also home to Naval Construction Battalion Center Gulfport, established in 1942 and currently the East Coast home of the Seabees, the Navy’s skilled construction branch. The city is served by Gulfport-Biloxi International Airport.

Gulfport was founded by William H. Hardy, president of the Gulf and Ship Island Railroad, as a lumber-shipping center. His successor, Joseph T. Jones, took up where Hardy left off, and by 1902 had dredged a harbor and opened a shipping lane to the Atlantic Ocean. The City of Gulfport was incorporated in 1898. Gulfport also became a tourist destination early on. A 1912 magazine touts Gulfport as a resort community with fishing and golf, hunting, tennis and scenic drives. By the middle of the 20th century, Gulfport had established a Coca-Cola bottling plant, and Olin Mathieson Chemical Corporation’s extruded-aluminum plant. The Edgewater Gulf Shopping Center was built in 1960. Other businesses of the day included Colonial Bakery Company, Gulfport Piping Company, Irby Brothers Machine and Iron Works, and retailers J.C. Penney and Sears. Today, Gulfport employers include shipbuilders Trinity Yachts, U.S. Marine Incorporated, and Gulf Ship, as well as manufacturers Northrop Grumman and Seeman Composites Inc. Although Gulfport suffered severe damage from Hurricane Katrina, the economy is recovering, and a project to restore the early 19th-century building facades in the downtown area is underway.
