New Orleans is the largest city in the state of Louisiana, with a population of about 343,800. Located astride the Mississippi River and just south of Lake Ponchartrain, the city of New Orleans also comprises New Orleans Parish. Because of its access to the Atlantic Ocean and the Mississippi River, the Port of New Orleans has long been a major shipping and trading center for both imported and exported goods, and an entry point for immigrants from many parts of the world. Petroleum refining, chemical production, shipbuilding and tourism are some of the city’s key economic sectors.

Named for the French city of Orleans, New Orleans, Louisiana was founded in 1718 and became a part of the United States in 1803. Sugar and cotton were early cash crops in New Orleans and food products manufacturing continued to be an important part of New Orleans industry. The Reily Foods Company was founded in 1902 as a coffee roasting company. In 1974, they acquired Blue Plate Foods, which had been making mayonnaise and condiments in New Orleans since 1941. The Blue Plate building is a historic landmark, and is being converted to apartments. Other food companies with a presence in New Orleans have included Quaker Oats, Red Star Yeast, and Folgers, which operates a large coffee-roasting complex. Despite the catastrophic effects of Hurricane Katrina on the city, New Orleans continues to be a major oil and energy producer, home to companies such as Royal Dutch Shell, Chevron and Entergy. Other top industries include chemical plants and shipbuilding. Current top employers include Tulane University, Ochsner Health System and Acme Truck Lines.
