Asbestos at Naval Air Station (NAS) Pensacola

Pensacola’s history is rich with early connections to the U.S. military. Pensacola Navy Yard was founded in 1825 and became home to the Navy’s first permanent air station in 1914. The station served to provide naval facilities service and support. It assisted with the operation and maintenance of the Navy’s weapons and aircraft.

The station is best known as the initial primary training base for all officers pursuing designation as naval aviators and naval flight officers. It was also the advanced training base for most naval flight officers. Today, the station is called NAS Pensacola and employs more than 16,000 military and 7,400 civilian personnel.

Through the years, operations and maintenance activities at the air station have produced many types of waste materials. These materials include waste oils and solvents, paints, radium paint waste, asbestos and insecticides. NAS Pensacola is an Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)-designated Superfund site. The Navy leads the investigation and cleanup of the site. The EPA and Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP) oversee these efforts.

Many veterans who served before the 1980s experienced asbestos exposure. Workers and veterans who served at NAS Pensacola may have also been exposed. As a result, they are in one of the highest occupational risk categories for developing asbestos-related cancers, such as mesothelioma.
