Asbestos Exposure, Mesothelioma Doctors and Lawyers in Utica, New York

Utica is a city on the Mohawk River in Oneida County, New York. Utica serves as the county seat for Oneida County, and has a current population of 62,235. The city offers a diverse mix of residential and commercial areas, historic districts and green spaces, including three city parks designed by Frederick Law Olmstead. Outdoor recreation facilities include tennis courts, pools, golf course and a ski resort. Utica is also home to Utica College, founded in 1946 as an extension of Syracuse University, and now an independent institution.

Utica was founded in 1773, on land formerly occupied by Fort Schuyler, and incorporated as a village in 1798. Utica increased in population and commercial development rapidly. Utica's first major industry, textiles, developed somewhat later than other northern cities. The Mohawk River supplied little power, but the opening of the Erie and Chenango Canals made available a ready supply of coal, and steam-powered mills began to spring up by mid-century. The largest of these, the Utica Knitting Company, was founded in 1872 and made Utica the nation's leading producer of knitwear. Late in the 19th century, the machine tool industry overtook textiles as a major revenue source. Companies such as Utica Drop Forge & Tool Company and Chicago Pneumatic Tool Company, which opened its Utica plant in 1948, lasted well into the 20th century. In the early 20th century, General Electric established a radio manufacturing plant which would eventually become an aerospace electronics division before closing in the mid-1990s. By mid-century, the textile and machine tool industries had moved on, and Utica was experiencing economic and population loss. In recent years, Utica has begun restoring older industrial properties, including the GE facility, to attract new manufacturing and create a transportation hub.

Utica's lengthy history of manufacturing makes exposure to asbestos an ongoing concern. Workers exposed to asbestos may be at risk for pleural mesothelioma and other asbestos diseases. If you or a loved one were diagnosed with asbestos cancer in Utica, you may also benefit from seeking the advice of an asbestos lawyer.
