04. Asbestos Use in Buffalo

Asbestos Use in Buffalo, New York

Dozens of companies in the Buffalo area used asbestos from the early 1900s until the 1980s. The mineral was so common in the city’s steel mills and boiler houses that the region has been called New York’s “Asbestos Alley” by the Environmental Working Group. Other industries in Buffalo also frequently relied on asbestos, including Ford and other automakers with facilities in the area. Paper mills, mines, chemical refineries and power generating sites also caused exposure. Eastman Kodak and the Dunkirk Generating Station are two examples of worksites in these industries that used asbestos.

Between 1999 and 2017, Erie County ranked first in New York state for the most mesothelioma deaths. Workers and residents may continue to risk exposure and related health risks from past uses of asbestos.

Asbestos at Bethlehem Steel

One of the most notable sites that caused asbestos exposure in Buffalo is the Bethlehem Steel plant in Lackawanna. By World War II, it was the world’s largest steelmaking facility, and it continued operating until 1983. The plant eventually shuttered due to financial difficulties caused by cheaper imports. However, by the time the plant closed, thousands of workers were exposed to dangerous asbestos fibers. In 1965 alone, research estimates the Lackawanna plant employed around 20,000 workers.

Bethlehem Steel used asbestos to insulate steam boilers, ladles, smelting molds and other high-temperature equipment. The plant also rolled uranium rods during the war years, which exposed workers to unsafe levels of radiation.

Many former workers at the plant have now been diagnosed with cancer and respiratory ailments, including lung cancer and mesothelioma. Some workers recall the factory floor would appear to be snowing some days because of the airborne asbestos debris.

As of 2018, more than 3,400 former employees have filed claims against Bethlehem Steel for asbestos-related injuries.
