Asbestos Exposure, Mesothelioma Doctors and Lawyers in Schenectady, New York
Schenectady is a city in New York state, located near the confluence of the Mohawk and Hudson Rivers. With an estimated population of around 61,000 inhabitants (as of 2000 census), Schenectady is the county seat of Schenectady County, as well as its only city. Its history largely shaped by industrial giants General Electric and American Locomotive Company, Schenectady is rich in reminders of the past. The 17th-century Stockade District, New York's first national historic district, preserves a Dutch colonial neighborhood by the Mohawk River. The GE Realty Plot, a residential neighborhood planned for GE executives, offers a variety of 19th and 20th architectural styles, as well as the first all-electric home. Schenectady is also home to Union College, founded in 1795.
Schenectady was incorporated as a city in 1798. Thomas Edison relocated his Edison Machine Works company to Schenectady in 1887, and formed the General Electric Company in 1892. GE's Schenectady Works carried out manufacturing, research and development at its massive complex of more than 240 buildings, producing turbines, motors, wire and cable, appliances, and many other electrical products. Today, GE maintains its headquarters in Schenectady, but much of the manufacturing has moved elsewhere. The American Locomotive Company, also known as ALCO, formed from the merger of several manufacturers, including Schenectady Locomotive Works, in 1901 and quickly became the second-largest producer of steam engines in the United States. With the help of neighbor General Electric and Ingersoll Rand, ALCO produced the first successful diesel-electric locomotive in 1924. Although diversification helped keep ALCO in business, the Schenectady plant ceased production in 1969. Economic decline and population loss characterized the city in the late 20th century, but Schenectady in recent years has seen a rejuvenation of its downtown area, growth in high-tech companies, and development of housing, restaurants, and a new hotel and cinema.
Schenectady has a substantial legacy of manufacturing activity, in industries where asbestos-containing products were widely used. Workers exposed to asbestos may be at risk for asbestos cancer. If you or a loved one were diagnosed with asbestos cancer in Schenectady, you should also consider contacting an asbestos attorney.
