Asbestos Exposure, Mesothelioma Doctors and Lawyers in Corning, New York

Corning is a small city of approximately 10,800 residents, located in the Finger Lakes region of New York State. Known as the "Crystal City," Corning's history is closely tied to that of the glassmaking industry, and of Fortune 500 company Corning Incorporated, the city's primary employer. Corning's historic Gaffer District, where Corning, Inc. is located, is also home to a significant performing and fine arts community. The Corning Museum of Glass showcases a major collection of glass objects from around the world, and houses an important glass research center. The Rockwell Museum of Western Art, located in the former 1893 City Hall building, celebrates American Western and Native American art.

First settled in 1796 along the Chemung River, Corning's earliest industry was lumber. The river provided power and transport, and several mills operated in Corning, until the lumber supply gave out. Corning incorporated as a town in 1848 and continued to prosper with the help of the nearby Chemung Canal system, which allowed the town to ship coal, tobacco, whiskey and other goods for sale. The town grew with the railroads and the glass industry, becoming a city in 1890. The Corning Glass Works established itself in Corning in 1868, and after a somewhat rocky start, began mass-producing glass wares for scientific and industrial applications. Corning developed the glass bulb for Thomas Edison's incandescent light bulb; the bulbs were so successful they accounted for half of Corning's production by 1908. In 1903, the Steuben Glass Works began producing art glass blanks for Corning, and was eventually absorbed by them. In 1908, Corning developed Pyrex, a tough borosilicate glass used in laboratory supplies and cookware. Despite serious flooding from Hurricane Agnes in 1972, Corning Glass Works remained committed to the town, helping to restore buildings damaged by the floodwaters. Today the company has diversified into high-tech applications such as fiber optics, photovoltaic glass, and flat-panel television and computer screens.

Corning's lengthy history of industry and architectural reuse makes exposure to asbestos an ongoing concern. Workers exposed to asbestos are at risk for mesothelioma and other asbestos-related diseases. If you were exposed to asbestos in Corning, you may benefit from seeking the advice of an asbestos attorney.
