Asbestos Exposure, Mesothelioma Doctors and Lawyers in Binghamton, New York

The city of Binghamton, New York is located in the southern part of the state, near the Pennsylvania border. As the county seat for Broome County, this city of 47,380 is a center of government and industry for the area. Located at the juncture of the Susquehanna and Chenango Rivers, Binghamton flourished as a vital transportation hub in the 19th century, and was noted for the manufacture of cigars, shoes and other products. Today, though some manufacturing remains, Binghamton's economic base has shifted to the high-tech, aerospace, healthcare and higher education fields. The city also offers a variety of cultural attractions, including a zoo, the Kopernik Space Center observatory, and six working antique carousels.

Binghamton was settled around 1802, and incorporated as a town in 1834. The Chenango Canal, and later the Erie railroad (1848), made transporting goods cheaper and easier, and wartime manufacturing contributed to Binghamton’s rapid growth. After the Civil War, the industrial boom continued as new businesses opened and immigrant workers arrived. By 1890, Binghamton had become the country's second-largest cigar producer, with more than fifty factories dedicated to making the hand-rolled smokes. The cigar industry declined with automation and changing tastes, but the Endicott-Johnson Shoe Corporation, established in 1899, soon took its place. By the mid-1940s, it was the city's largest employer and chief benefactor, donating land for parks, churches, and two libraries. In the early 20th century, two companies foreshadowed a turn towards technology: the Bundy Manufacturing Company (est. 1889), which went on to become International Business Machines, and Link Aviation, Inc., which developed the first flight simulator. The end of the Cold War brought an economic slump, as companies such as Ansco and General Electric left the area. The high-tech industry eventually recovered, however, and IBM, Lockheed Martin, and BAE Systems are all prominent employers today.

Binghamton's history of industrial activity and periods of urban renewal make asbestos exposure, and the risk of mesothelioma, an ongoing concern.
