Asbestos Exposure, Mesothelioma Doctors and Lawyers in Auburn, New York

Auburn, incorporated in 1848, is a city in the Finger Lakes Region of New York State. In addition to being the county seat, Auburn is the largest community in Cayuga County, with a population of 27,138. The city provides a commercial and cultural center for the region. Auburn is home to a minor league baseball team, the Auburn Doubledays, as well as museums and historic sites, such as the Harriet Tubman Home, and the Willard Memorial Chapel, designed by Louis Comfort Tiffany in 1894 as part of the Auburn Theological Seminary (1818-1939). The city's economic base includes light manufacturing, in fields such as steel, plastics, fiber optics and pumps. Government, retail, education and other service-related industries are also well represented among Auburn employers.

John L. Hardenbergh, a veteran of the American Revolution, settled near Owasco Lake in 1793 and built a sawmill and gristmill. In 1805, the farming village founded by Hardenbergh was renamed Auburn, and designated the county seat. The Auburn Prison, now Auburn Correctional Facility, opened in 1816, and incorporated several innovative approaches to prisoner treatment, including enforced silence, distinctive uniforms, and productive work. The Auburn System was a model for other prisons for decades, but eventually fell out of favor. In 1825, the Erie Canal opened the area to shipping, and manufacturing expanded. In 1857, D.M. Osborne & Company was established to manufacture harvesting equipment. By 1897, they were Auburn’s largest business, operating a machinery factory, a rolling mill and a twine factory. After it was acquired by International Harvester in 1903, the company continued as IH's Auburn Works, making airplane parts during WWII. Metalworking continues in Auburn today. Hammond & Irving, Inc., has operated continuously since 1919, producing rolled rings and forged metal products. Auburn Steel Inc., now a division of Nucor Steel, began producing bar steel in 1974.

Auburn's ongoing industrial activity, along with restoration of historic structures, puts Auburn workers in a high risk category for asbestos exposure and mesothelioma, a cancer of the lungs. Mesothelioma cancer centers in and around Auburn are listed at the bottom of this page. If you were exposed to asbestos in Auburn, you may benefit from seeking the advice of an asbestos lawyer.
