Mesothelioma and Asbestos Expsure in Boston, Massachusetts

Asbestos Exposure in Boston, MA

Settled in 1630, and incorporated as a city in 1822, Boston is the largest city in Massachusetts and the state capital. One of the oldest cities in the United States, and the largest in New England, Boston began as a homesteading community and grew into an important economic and cultural center. Often the scene of important social and political changes, today the city is home to world-renowned hospitals, universities, historic landmarks and the nation's oldest subway system.

Boston occupies an area of 89.6 square miles - almost half of it water. With a population of almost 650,000, Boston is the fourth most densely populated city that is not part of another city's metropolitan area. Several Boston neighborhoods are built on reclaimed land, with earth from the removal of two of the city's three large hills. From the beginning, Boston's sheltered natural harbor made it a center for maritime activities, including shipbuilding, fishing and merchant shipping. After the Revolutionary War, Boston became one of the world's wealthiest international trading ports, with exports including rum, fish, salt, and tobacco. The Charlestown Navy Yard, later to be known as Boston Naval Shipyard, was established in 1801 and built the first U.S. ship of the line, U.S.S. Independence. The yard was modernized several times and remained in active service until 1974, turning out destroyers and other ships for the modern navy and employing thousands of workers. The Boston Navy Yard today is preserved as an historic site and popular tourist attraction. It is the homeport for U.S.S. Constitution, the oldest commissioned warship in the U.S.

Boston's manufacturing industry grew alongside its shipping industry; by the mid-19th century, the city's industrial manufacturing overtook international trade in economic importance, fueled in part by successive waves of immigration. Railroads and rivers provided access to goods and services, and power for mills and factories. Boston was a leader in garment and leather goods production through the end of the 19th century. Many Boston businesses, including Gillette Safety Razor Company and Filene's department store, achieved national prominence. By the mid-20th century, many of the city's manufacturers had moved elsewhere, prompted by aging facilities and increasing labor costs. In response, the Boston Redevelopment Authority was founded in 1957, and initiated a variety of urban renewal projects. By the 1970's, construction and the economy were booming. Skyscrapers such as the John Hancock and Prudential Center towers dominated the skyline. Institutions such as MIT, Harvard Medical School, Boston University, Brigham and Women's Hospital and Mass. Eye and Ear continued to expand and modernize through the end of the 20th century. The financial and biotechnology industries also grew.

Boston's rich and varied manufacturing and shipbuilding history, accompanied by cycles of urban development and expansion, has made asbestos exposure an issue for workers. Asbestos was frequently used in many Boston industries. Use of asbestos-containing materials has created additional risk for workers involved in building construction, renovation and demolition.
