01. Laws and Regulations
Iowa Asbestos Laws and Regulations
In addition to federal asbestos regulations, Iowa has adopted some state regulations in regard to the handling of asbestos and licensing for asbestos professionals. Below is a brief summary of the asbestos-related laws in Iowa.
Occupational Asbestos Exposure in Iowa
The Iowa Department of Natural Resources is responsible for overseeing the majority of the asbestos regulations in Iowa. Specifically, the agency’s Air Quality Bureau ensures that companies within the state abide by the EPA’s NESHAP. Iowa also has an OSHA-approved state plan which is overseen by the Iowa Division of Labor. The Iowa state OSHA office can be found in Des Moines, and their regulations can be viewed under Chapter 3 of the Iowa Administrative Code.
Licensing of Iowa Asbestos Professionals
Any companies involved in asbestos projects must have a state permit, which is valid for one year and must be renewed annually. The Iowa Division of Labor oversees the licensing of all asbestos professionals. These regulations can be found under Chapter 88B of the Iowa Code.
Asbestos Transport and Disposal in Iowa
Asbestos must be transported by certified professionals and disposed of in a landfill that’s equipped for hazardous waste like asbestos. The Iowa Department of Natural Resources is responsible for overseeing the proper disposal of asbestos.
