Asbestos Use in Atlanta, Georgia

Asbestos exposure in Georgia may have led workers and residents to develop an asbestos disease. Asbestos was widely used in construction materials and heat-resistant fabrics up until the early 1980s. Much of the asbestos used in Atlanta was mined in Georgia, which has the largest concentration of naturally occurring asbestos in the eastern United States.

In Atlanta, asbestos can still be found in many commercial and industrial buildings, schools, apartment buildings and homes constructed prior to the 1980s. When these buildings begin to break down, are remodeled or demolished, there is significant risk of asbestos exposure in the immediate area. One prominent source of exposure in Georgia was the Georgia-Pacific Corporation.

Georgia-Pacific Corporation and Asbestos Exposure

Georgia-Pacific Corporation was first founded in Augusta, Georgia, in the 1920s. It was a lumber company that operated various sawmills. Georgia-Pacific Corporation later expanded into the paper and pulp industry. Over time, the company expanded and eventually became headquartered in Atlanta.

As the company grew, it began acquiring other businesses that used asbestos, such as Bestwall Gypsum Company. Until the 1970s, Bestwall Gypsum manufactured asbestos-containing plaster and drywall adhesive. During several years of this production, the company was operated under Georgia-Pacific Corporation.

Reports show Georgia-Pacific Corporation executives likely knew of the dangers of asbestos while they continued to manufacture these products. The company was accused of trying to pay scientists to disprove the hazards of their asbestos products.

The manufacture of asbestos-containing materials by Georgia-Pacific Corporation and its subsidiaries led to widespread exposure. Workers at their facilities, consumers and others who worked with these products risked exposure.

Georgia-Pacific Corporation stopped producing asbestos materials in the 1970s. It continues to operate in Atlanta today.
