Annapolis, Maryland

Annapolis is a city on the Chesapeake Bay in Anne Arundel County, Maryland. Founded in 1649, Annapolis is the capital city of Maryland and has a current population of about 38,300. Maritime trades have played a key part in the city's development, from shipbuilding to sport fishing. Government, healthcare and education dominate the city's economy today, with top employers including Anne Arundel Medical Center, the United States Naval Academy (founded 1845) and Constellation Energy. Annapolis is also home to the nation's third oldest college, St. John's College, which was founded in 1701 as King William's School.

Annapolis was established as a Puritan settlement named Providence on the north shore of the Severn River. The settlement was later relocated to the south shore and took the name of Anne Arundel's Town. In 1694, the town, renamed Annapolis, became the new capital and was formally incorporated in 1708. The city began to grow, following the pattern of great European cities, with streets radiating out from the city center. Agriculture and shipping formed the primary industries, with tobacco being the chief trade crop. Other products included wheat, fruit, and seafood. By the 1860's, more than a dozen oyster-packing houses lined the waterfront. The 1880s brought electric street lighting, telephone service and railroads, increasing Annapolis's desirability as a resort town. Guidebooks from the early 20th century depict elegant mansions, and businesses typical of a sophisticated college town: hotels, restaurants, tailors, livery stables, and attorneys. Service industries such as retail and healthcare remain important to Annapolis's economic structure today.

Annapolis has an ongoing history of construction and historic preservation, making asbestos exposure a cause of concern. Workers exposed to asbestos may be at risk for mesothelioma, a cancer of the lungs. If you were exposed to asbestos in Annapolis, you may benefit from seeking the advice of an asbestos lawyer.
