Asbestos Use in Lansing, Michigan

Asbestos exposure in Michigan may have led workers and residents to develop an asbestos disease. Lansing and the mid-Michigan capital area are home to many industries that relied heavily on asbestos for decades. For instance, asbestos has been found at dozens of factories and commercial properties in Lansing. The Auto-Owners Insurance Building, government offices operated by the City of Lansing and facilities maintained by the Board of Water & Light contained asbestos materials.

Lansing workers also risked asbestos exposure in the city’s sizable automotive industry. Asbestos-containing materials have been found at facilities operated by the Chevrolet Motor Company, Oldsmobile and General Motors’ Fisher Body Division.

Due to the widespread use of asbestos in these facilities, labor groups such as United Auto Workers Local 652 have sponsored free pulmonary screenings and chest X-rays for Lansing workers. In 2020, screenings were available for workers hired before 1979 who had at least five years of industrial exposure.

A variety of other facilities in Lansing were built with asbestos, including a wastewater treatment plant.

Asbestos Violations at East Lansing, Michigan’s Wastewater Treatment Plant

Although the use of asbestos has declined since 1980, contaminated materials are still present in a variety of residential and commercial properties in Lansing. Properties with asbestos include government buildings and public works facilities.

In 2007, the City of East Lansing commissioned a study regarding potential asbestos risks at its wastewater treatment plant. An independent company called Fibertec found asbestos in more than 80 locations within the facility. Fibertec noted some of the asbestos materials were damaged and friable, meaning fibers could easily become airborne.

Its report recommended alerting employees immediately. However, at least nine employees were never warned of the dangers. These employees took legal action against the city due to asbestos exposure. The workers stated dangerous asbestos materials were never labeled and employees did not receive protective equipment. One worker also claimed they were told they would lose their job if they spoke about the presence of asbestos in the facility.

Asbestos abatement later began in 2014. By this time, many workers had already risked exposure. Employees also reported other environmental violations related to multiple mercury spills that weren’t properly contained or reported.
