Grand Junction Overview

Grand Junction’s location at the confluence of the Grand River and Gunnison River helped propel the area toward economic prosperity. Early economic activities were comprised of farming and cattle raising, as well as retail sales such as gasoline, hunting, and fishing. Close to the turn of the century, Standard Oil Company’s Rocky Mountain operations and Continental Oil & Transportation Company merged to become Continental Oil Company of Colorado. Continental Oil Company was successful in Colorado and by the 1930s, it had become a fully integrated oil company with assets in production, refining, and distribution. Grand Junction was also home to Climax Uranium Mill, a now decommissioned mill that provided uranium ore to the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission. Grand Junction’s Climax Uranium Company thrived during the 1950s to 1970s, producing more than two million tons of ore and expanding to twelve buildings. More recently, Grand Junction has turned into a major mountain biking destination, attracting many bikers from all over the U.S. The permanent festival site for Country Jam, an event that draws thousands of country music fans annually since 1992, is also located in Grand Junction.
