Port Arthur, Texas

Located 90 miles east of Houston on the western bank of Sabine Lake, Port Arthur is a city in Jefferson County. Port Arthur encompasses what were originally a number of different communities established at different times which have since been incorporated by the city including Griffing Park, Pear Ridge, and Lakeview. Port Arthur along with the neighboring cities of Beaumont and Orange, comprise what is known as the Golden Triangle, a major industrial area on the Gulf Coast. Port Arthur also had the designation of being a port of entry. In fact, by 1914, it ranked as the 12th largest port in the United States and the 2nd largest oil refining port; it is still one of Texas’ leading seaports. Today, Port Arthur is home to nearly 60,000 residents, it maintains three major refineries, and it is still the terminus of the Kansas City Southern railroad.

Similar to other neighboring cities, the eruption of Spindletop in 1901 changed the fate of Port Arthur. The port city immediately began to serve the needs of the new petrochemical industry, major oil companies-Gulf Oil Corporation, Magnolia, Humble, and Texaco-all emerged as a result. Gulf and Texaco built major refining facilities in Port Arthur. By 1957, five refineries were operating in the Port Arthur area. Port Arthur was recognized as the center of the world’s prosperous oil refining facilities. Major companies in and around the Port Arthur area include Motiva Enterprises, Premcor Refining (Now Valero), and BASF/Fina.
