Abilene, Texas

In 1883, Abilene incorporated as a city and became the county seat of Taylor County. Situated in west central Texas near the geographic center of the state, about 150 miles west of Fort Worth, Abilene is home to approximately 120,000 residents. Abilene was initially established by cattlemen as a stock shipping point in 1881 upon completion of the Texas and Pacific Railroad. At that time, Abilene was promoted as the "Future Great City of West Texas". Abilene has since become the commercial, retail, medical, and transportation hub of a 22-county area commonly referred to as the "Texas Midwest" or the "Big Country".

Since its incorporation, Abilene developed from an almost entirely agricultural economy to a diversified economy based on oil, agriculture, commerce, light manufacturing, and service. By the mid-1900s, the oil industry, including the development of exploration, drilling, refining, and oilfield service industries prospered. Manufacturing plants increased from 111 in 1979 to 145 in 1982. Similar expansion occurred in construction, retail and wholesale business. By the end of 2005, commercial and residential development had reached record levels in and around the city. Dyess Air Force Base, located on the west side of the city, is Abilene's largest employer with approximately 6,076 employees.

Abilene's prominent oil industry, coupled with significant residential and commercial construction activity, makes asbestos exposure, and the risk of mesothelioma, an ongoing concern. If you were diagnosed with mesothelioma in Abilene, you may benefit from seeking the advice of a mesothelioma lawyer.
