Akron Overview

Akron was founded in 1825 by Paul Williams and surveyor General Simon Perkins, who chose the spot for its strategic location on the Ohio-Erie Canal. Originally called South Akron, it merged with neighbor North Akron in 1836, incorporating as the village of Akron. Settled initially by Irish canal workers, Akron industrialized early, mass-producing stoneware, sewer pipe, toys and farm equipment. In 1895, the city introduced the nation’s first long-distance electric railway. In 1870, the B.F. Goodrich Company was founded in Akron, quickly followed by Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company, Firestone Tire and Rubber Company, and General Tire. The rubber industry boomed, and Akron’s population tripled between 1910 and 1920. Although rubber production has declined in the 21st century, Akron remains a leader in polymer research. The University of Akron is home to several research centers, including the Goodyear Polymer Center and National Polymer Innovation Center. Nearly 100 polymer-related businesses are located in Akron proper, and many more in the surrounding area.
